Mosquito Spraying Near SR-56 (CVREP Trail)

Filed under: Community — ken @ 12:13 pm

West Nile Virus is a problem this year, and the virus is spread by mosquitos. The county keeps the mosquito population under control by spraying a larvacide into areas of standing water (the larvacide does not harm other wildlife but kills mosquito larva.) I believe the CVREP Trail (the trail along SR-56) will be sprayed this month, possibly on Sept. 16 or 17. Watch for San Diego County trucks followed by helicopters spraying the area. For additional information or if you have questions, contact the San Diego County Vector Control (www.sdfightthebite.com), or see the Aerial Spraying Page. Note the Aerial Spraying Page indicates the spraying might be on Sept. 23.

Lead in Children’s and Prenatal Vitamins

Filed under: Community — ken @ 9:22 am

While this isn’t really on-topic, this seems relevant given all the children in this community: the FDA has found that there is lead in Children’s vitamins and in prenatal vitamins. See the TreeHugger Article and the FDA Article for additional information.

Lower Your Property Tax Bill Via Assessment Appeal

Filed under: Community — ken @ 10:14 am

If you’ve received an official looking mailing saying that a company will help you lower your property taxes for a fee, don’t do it! The County will do this for free! You just have to fill out a few forms and provide some current sales figures for similar houses, it’s not a big deal. See the County Board of Assessment Appeals page for additional information. On the other hand, if you get a mailing saying you must submit for an assessment appeal now (for a fee), and you’ll be charged a penalty if you don’t respond, you should contact the District Attorney’s office (619-531-4070) immediately. Our County Supervisor’s Office says that it’s fraud for a private company to represent that there is a penalty for not responding to mailings like this. Again, the County will perform this service for free, so why should you pay money to have someone else do it for you?

Del Mar Mesa Community Planning Board

Filed under: Community — ken @ 9:57 am

The community of Del Mar Mesa is our neighbor to the south-east, running east of Carmel Country Road (including the Meadows) and south of SR-56 (well, south of Palacio). See their Community Profile and a Map of San Diego Communities. They have their own community plan, their own planning board, and someday will have a neighborhood park. There is also a golf course and resort (The Grand Del Mar). The Del Mar Mesa Planning Board meets on the second Thursday of each month at the Carmel Valley Library. You can find their agenda at the City’s Del Mar Mesa Community Planning Board page.
