Information About Ocean Air Park

Filed under: Community, Park & Rec — ken @ 4:04 pm

The new Ocean Air Community Park in Carmel Valley (near Torrey Hills, south of SR-56) will be opening this summer (no, I don’t have the opening date, yet.) Last I heard, the park will be opening in September 2009. I’ll post after I hear the final date. I understand that much of the park looks complete, but there is still work to do (and the operations budget has to be approved by the City Council.)

Get Ready for Water Rationing

Filed under: Community — ken @ 1:18 pm

Starting in June, the City of San Diego will require reductions in water usage from everyone.  The Mayor has issued a Fact Sheet on the Level 2 Drought Alert, which provides general information on usage, enforcement and variances. You should know that you can only water 3 days a week (specific days based on odd or even house number), with a maximum of 10 minutes per station. There is also a Water Allocation Formula Fact Sheet, which expects residences to cut water 5% for interior use and an astonishing 45% for exterior (landscape) use! In addition, parks and other landscape areas (homeowner’s associations?) seem to also fall into the 45% reduction. Expect to see a lot of brown grass this summer… Update: It looks like the allocation fact sheet is out-of-date and the water reductions won’t have to be that large. More when I find the information, but be ready for cutbacks in June.

Swine Flu Update: Ho-Hum So Far

Time Magazine has a good article called, “Was the Alarm over Swine Flu Justified?”. As the World Health Organization (WHO) prepares to declare this a “pandemic”, we should remember this from the article:

…it’s important to understand that pandemic does not necessarily equal apocalypse. A pandemic occurs when a new flu virus emerges and starts spreading easily from person to person, and then from country to country… A pandemic doesn’t mean that the new virus is unusually deadly, only that it spreads easily…

So, when the WHO says, “pandemic”, they really mean the disease has spread worldwide, not that it’s been a global killer. I’m not saying we shouldn’t be on alert, but given Flu Experts are Encouraged by the Strains Mildness, perhaps we don’t need to panic just yet.
