The City of San Diego Water Department is hosting another public education session regarding the mandatory water use restrictions that began on June 1. The session will be held on June 10 in the Auditorium of the War Memorial Building in Balboa Park. It will begin promptly at 6 p.m. and will provide attendees with the opportunity to learn more about the new water use restrictions and to have their questions answered by Water Department staff.
The new water use restrictions were put in place by the Mayor and City Council because San Diego’s water wholesaler will be trimming what they provide to the City. The San Diego Water Department and its customers will need to match consumption with the new water supply targets. Missing the targets will lead to surcharges and steeply increased water costs that the City cannot afford.
More information and a detailed list of the new water use restrictions can be found at www.sandiego.gov/water.

After all the discussion about water rationing and mandatory limits, the actual water controls that have gone into effect are pretty mild. See the City Water Emergency Response website for complete details. The most important points seem to be:
- Water your yard a maximum of three days per week from June 1- Oct. 31. Find your assigned days at the City Water Emergency Response website.
- Only water before 10 a.m. or after 6 p.m.
- Run sprinklers no more than ten minutes per station each day.
- Wash cars at home between 6 p.m. and 10 a.m., and use a bucket or a hose with a positive shut-off nozzle (don’t let the water run). Commercial car washes are OK anytime.
Of course, you should be careful with all your water usage over the summer, fix any leaks, etc.
