Kids Book Clubs at the CV Library

The Child-Parent Book Club and the Teen Book Club have started this year at the Carmel Valley Library. The Child-Parent Book Club meets on the first Wednesday of each month, with the next meeting on October 7 where they’ll be discussing “The Graveyard Book,” by Neil Gaiman. The Teen Book Club meets on the third Monday of each month, with the next meeting on October 19 where they’ll be discussing “The Hunger Games,” by Suzanne Collins. Meet in the Carmel Valley Library Community Room at 6:45 PM for a 7:00 meeting.

CV Rec Center October Gym Schedule

The October Gym Schedule is now available for the CV Rec Center. You can pick up a copy at the Rec Center, or view it online at the CV Gym Schedule page or at the bottom of the CV Rec Center page. Sorry for not getting the September schedule posted, but I’ve been busy with a new volunteer job (creating the CCA Foundation website and the BMW Raven Raffle website.)

Canyon Crest Academy BMW Raffle

The Canyon Crest Academy Foundation is raffling off a 2010 BMW 328i Sedan to raise funds for programs at Canyon Crest Academy. Tickets are $40 and only 3000 tickets will be sold. Additional Del Mar School Board Meetings

The Save Our Del Mar Schools group informs me that there will be a special meeting of the Del Mar School Board at 6:00 PM on Wednesday, September 23, and the regular Board meeting at 5:45 PM on Wednesday, September 30. The 7/11 school closure committee and the new preschool proposal will likely be on the agenda. SD Police Warns About Burglary Scam

The San Diego Police Department is warning residents about a male suspect who used a ruse to gain entry into a home in the Rolando neighborhood and steal from the homeowner.

In September, an elderly victim notified police that a man had come to the door at about 3:30 p.m. claiming to be a city of San Diego Water Department employee. He was wearing what appeared to be a uniform with an ID badge hanging around his neck. He told her his name was Rich and that he needed to come inside and check the water pressure. He asked that the resident flush toilets in the restrooms while he ran water in the kitchen sink. After the suspect left, the resident realized that he had stolen cash. (more…)

New Youth Basketball Club at Boys & Girls

San Diego Sol Logo The San Diego Sol Youth Basketball Club is launching a new satellite branch in Carmel Valley. Tryouts are on Saturday Sept. 26, 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., and Sunday Sept. 27, 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Boys & Girls Club Polster branch on Mykonos Lane (by the CV Middle School.) Update 9/23/09: The tryouts are now at the Solana Beach Boys & Girls Club (533 Lomas Santa Fe Drive). See the San Diego Sol website for details. Open to boys and girls in grades 5 to 8. PHR MAD Meeting Canceled, Rescheduled

The Pacific Highlands Ranch Maintenance Assessment District Subcommittee meeting regularly scheduled for Thursday, September 17, 2009 has been canceled. The meeting has been rescheduled to Thursday, October 8, 7:00 PM at the Airoso community room in Pacific Highlands Ranch.

Torrey Pines Community Planning Board

Immediately to our west, just across the I-5 freeway, is the community of Torrey Pines. Torrey Pines is part of the City of San Diego, trapped between the Carmel Valley urbanization and the village of Del Mar. The community has its own Planning Board (see the TPCPB Website — the Agendas may be found on the City Website), which meets monthly on the second Thursday of each month. The next meeting is on Thursday, September 10, 2009 at 7:00 PM at the Del Mar Heights Elementary School Multi-Use Room, 13555 Boquita Drive, Del Mar, CA 92014.

MCAS Miramar Update, Sept 8-10

The community relations group at MCAS Miramar regularly issues notices about operations on the base. Here are the updates for Sept 8-10, 2009:

  1. On September 10, there will be standard rotary-wing operations using the Landing Helicopter Deck (LHD) from the early evening to late night (concluding before midnight).
  2. There will be standard fixed-wing operations using the Field Carrier Landing Practice (FCLP) pattern on September 9 from the late afternoon to late night (concluding before 9:30 pm). Additional day time operations will occur on September 8 & 10, and should conclude by 2 pm.

Del Mar Schools Info Meeting on Closure Proposal

The Del Mar Union School District is considering closing an elementary school to save money. To this end, the district has created a committee (the “7/11 District Advisory Committee”) to consider the issue. A group of parents from the district have now formed the “Save our Schools Committee” to work to keep all of the elementary schools open. The Save our Schools Committee will hold an informational meeting at Del Mar Hills Performing Arts Center, 14085 Mango Drive, Del Mar, CA 92014 on Wednesday, September 9, 2009 at 7:00pm.
