A free family music program sponsored by the Friends of the Carmel Valley Library will be held on Wednesday, July 24 at 7:00 p.m. in its community room. It will feature Dromia in a program of Balkan folk music. The trio, formed in 2008, plays folk music from Greece, Albania, Bulgaria, Macedonia, and Turkey, as well as Roma (gypsy) melodies from this region. It has performed at many venues in Southern California, including San Diego’s Folk Dance Center and Balboa Park’s Spanish Village, Café Aman in Los Angeles, Kypseli Greek Dance Center in Sherman Oaks, the Laguna Folkdancers’ Festival in Newport Beach, and the annual Greek festivals in San Diego and Cardiff. Its members are Mary Marshall on various ethnic percussion instruments, Sanna Rosengren on vocals and violin, and Dan Ziagos on accordion. The program will last 45 minutes. July’s free family music program sponsored by the Friends of the Carmel Valley Library will be held on Wednesday, July 10 at 7:00 p.m. in its community room. It will feature Celia Lawley, the Fiddle Girl, in a program of Irish, Cajun, Bluegrass, Gypsy, Greek, and other violin music. The program will last 45 minutes. Celia’s love of music started at age 5 with lessons in violin, piano, and voice. She graduated from the USC School of Music with a degree in violin performance and then began performing popular styles of music including country, bluegrass, Latin jazz, rock, blues, Cajun, and Celtic. This led to performances throughout the United States and Canada on TV and at fairs, festivals, and concerts, including ones at the Calgary Exhibition and Stampede, Pacific Northwest Exhibition, National Rodeo Finals, SeaWorld, San Diego Zoo, and Ramona Bluegrass Festival. She has also performed at many libraries and other venues in Southern California as a solo act and with various bands. Burlap is gone, and Searsucker is on the way. The Searsucker facebook page says that the new restaurant will open on July 17, so get ready for a new, casual eatery. (Update: For more information and reservations, call 858.369.5700.) Their website says, "Chef Malarkey has created a fantastic eatery full of local fare. The menu includes fresh seafood caught on the San Diego coast as well as locally brewed lagers and ales on tap. Friends and family can chat with chefs and servers as easily as they can with each other. Searsucker isn't a place to get away; it is a place to get together."
The next Summer Serenades Concert is on July 7, 2013 from 5:00 to 7:00 PM, featuring Plato Soul, a Variety dance band. The concerts are free to the public and we encourage you to bring your family and friends and enjoy an evening of music and dancing. The Carmel Valley Recreation Council meeting scheduled for Tuesday, July 2, 2013 at 7:00 pm has been canceled since there is no business to discuss. The County of San Diego, the City of San Diego, and lots of other local cities are holding LOTS of Movies in the Park this summer, at parks all over town (run by FunFlicks.com). Two are local, with "The Croods" at Ocean Air Recreation Center on July 26, 2013, and "Wreck-It Ralph" at the Carmel Valley Recreation Center on July 28. The Carmel Valley Community Planning Board will hold it's regular monthly meeting on June 27, 2013 from 7:00 to 10:00 pm at the Carmel Valley Library, 3919 Townsgate Drive. The Carmel Valley Recreation Council presents its 20th year of Summer Serenades Concerts. This year the lineup includes some of your favorite dance bands along with some new sounds. There is a new mixed-use development planned in Carmel Country Highlands (Carmel Valley South of SR-56...Neighborhood 10 – corner of Carmel Country and Carmel Mountain Roads – formerly known as Carmel Highlands Square), which is now known as “Merge.” A presentation on the updated "Merge" development has been scheduled for this Wednesday, June 12, at 6PM at the Torrey Hills Hilton Garden Inn, 3939 Ocean Bluff Ave, San Diego, California, 92130. This neighborhood 10 parcel, formerly owned and planned by Pardee has been purchased and redesigned by Sea Breeze Properties. The approved development is all retail, while the new proposal includes a mixture of retail and housing. The goal of this meeting will be to have the time to review the proposed project in detail, including what traffic is allocated and uses are allowed in the existing Community Plan and its environmental documents. The developer will also be in a position to show the architecture and any changes they will have made based on the feedback received to date.
